THE ONE THING TO MEASURE

Paper size is not
the opening size.

The paper is what you print on. The opening is what you see after the frame lip covers the edge. Print to the opening and the finished piece will be one size too small.

A frame sold as 8×10 usually has an opening around 9.5×7.5 in landscape. The paper is 10×8; the frame covers 0.25 in on every side.

Example: nominal 8 × 10 frame / 9.5 × 7.5 in opening / 0.25 in frame lip

Paper 10 × 8 inches, visible opening 9.5 × 7.5 inches, frame lip 0.25 inches. PAPER 10 × 8 IN 8 IN VISIBLE OPENING 9.5 × 7.5 IN FRAME LIP 0.25 IN 10 IN PAPER
